General Data Services - Data Archive

Estimated sunspot number (EISN)

Data lies at the heart of ESA's Space Weather activities. Many of the user requirements and components to be delivered as part of the SWE segment make reference to requirements on the availability of and access to data of diverse types. This includes real-time and near-real-time data but also archives of past and historical data.

The general data archive provides access to the archives of all data and products included in the ESA SWE service network.

This service is implemented through a combination of products, tools and alerts which can be found through the following tabs along with expert support provided by the teams constituting the SWE Network. Should you require further guidance in the use of this service, or have specific questions about any aspects of the service presented here, don’t hesitate to contact the Helpdesk.

The service is implemented through the following set of assets:

  • Kanzelhöhe Observatory (UGraz/KSO) provides the latest solar full disk images and movies in Hα, latest solar full disk images in Whitelight, latest automatically detected optical flares in near real time and automatic email alerts in cases of major flares.
  • SRC SGIArv is developed in the frame of "Space Weather Expert Service Centres Definitions and Development". It provides archives of 10 solar and geomagnetic indices for thermospheric drag calculation such as F10.7 Daily Observed Flux Density, Definitive Ap and Kp indexes, IMF Bx, By and Bz, etc..
  • INAF/OACT provides Full disc observations of the Sun in the center of the Hα line (656.28 nm) and in the red wing of the same line (656.78 nm). A description of the sunspot groups is also provided on the basis of daily drawings of SunSPotS and pores by projection of the Sun image.
  • The propagation tool (PROPTOOL) provides supports the assessment of CME/CIR and SEP arrival times at planets, spacecraft and other solar system objects such as comets. It supports the tracking of heliospheric structures using white light J-maps and has access to catalogs of CME/CIR trajectories.
  • The Archive Product Browser (HPARC/PB) provides access to a sub-set of the forecast, NRT and alert products made available by the Expert Groups within the H-ESC consortium. The main purpose is to provide access to historical information in support of event analysis, case studies, design work and the development of operational procedures based on realistic product timelines;
  • The CALLISTO spectrometer is a programmable heterodyne receiver built in the framework of IHY2007 and ISWI by former Radio and Plasma Physics Group (PI Christian Monstein) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland. This application provides access to the data from these receivers that are installed on radio antennas around the globe. The data are used for the identification of radio bursts as indications of Solar phenomena driving Space Weather.
  • The Drag-Based Model (DBM) tool provides predictions of the interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) travel and its arrival at an arbitrary ecliptic-plane location or at already listed planets and satellites in ecliptic-plane orbits.
  • The Space Environment Information System (SPENVIS) coupling several empirical and engineering models of the space environment and its effects on spacecraft or components based on a mission plan;
  • The COMESEP Alert System (COronal Mass Ejections and Solar Energetic Particle) provides tools for forecasting geomagnetic storms and solar energetic particle (SEP) radiation storms;
  • Ionosphere Monitoring and Prediction Center (IMPC) provided by the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
  • Alert/E provides human forecaster based notification and technical forecasts for near-Earth heliosphere
  • Enlil/E provides predicted near-Earth solar wind properties and CME arrival based on the Enlil-MHD model (and ensembles of this model)
  • The AMDA system provides a science archive of planetary, solar wind, Earth magnetosphere and ionosphere mission and ground based products. In addition it supports a range of standard models such as magnetic footprints, magnetic fields, solar wind propagation to planets and probes as well as access to external databases of observations and simulations
  • The Energetic Particle Telescope (EPT) on PROBA-V provides measurements of energetic electrons, protons and helium fluxes at LEO orbit
  • The DYnamic Atmospheric Shower Tracking Interactive Model Application (DYASTIMA) providing a shower cascade simulation in an atmosphere
  • The Space Research Laboratory Solar Energetic Particles (UTU-SEP) products provide access to a high energy SEP event list as well as the calculation of the expected high energy proton fluence and worst-case proton flux for a specific mission length due to SEPs
  • SWE Data allows the user to access all data contained in the repository providing analysis and visualisation tools.

All archives of data and service products included in the ESA SWE network can be accessed from the product catalogue matrix in the "Products" tab. These products are ordered and categorised as per the ESA product specification documents according to the physical domain and product types.

User help and guidelines for each of the individual products can be accessed on the individual product pages.

SWE Data is a web application that provides access to a wide range of Space Weather related data sources covering the areas of the spacecraft, ionospheric, and ground effects. SWE Data allows the user to access all data contained in the repository providing analysis and visualisation tools from these disparate sources.

The propagation tool supports the assessment of CME (Coronal Mass Ejections) and CIR (Corotating Interaction Regions) and SEP (Solar Energetic Particle) arrival times at planets, spacecraft and other solar system objects such as comets. It supports the tracking of heliospheric structures using white light J-maps and has access to catalogues of CME/CIR trajectories. It is also connected to science archives of in-situ data (AMDA) and imagery data to assist with posteriori analysis.

SPENVIS (Space Environment Information System) is a web-based interface for assessing the space environment and its effects on spacecraft systems and crews. The system is used for mission analysis and planning. SPENVIS includes several empirical models of the space environment covering mainly cosmic rays, solar energetic particles, the natural radiation belts, magnetic fields, space plasmas and the upper atmosphere. A range of engineering models are also available to help assess the effects of the space environment on spacecraft such as surface and internal charging, energy deposition, solar cell damage and SEU rates. Usually these later models take their inputs from the empirical models present in SPENVIS. The system also includes extensive background information on the space environment, the environment models and the related standards.

The Space Research Laboratory Solar Energetic Particles (UTU-SEP) products consist of several tools to calculate expected very high-energy solar energetic particle environment specifications for mission durations between 0.5 and 7 years: cumulative and worst-case event fluences for very high-energy (10-1000 MeV) protons, peak flux for very high-energy (330-700 MeV) protons, cumulative and worst-case fluences for high-energy (13-100 MeV/n) heavy ions. A catalogue of SEP events based on SOHO/ERNE observations of 55-80 MeV protons is also provided containing information on event start and end times (protons and electrons), peak intensity (high-energy protons and electrons), proton and heavy ion fluence, and information on associated solar flares and CMEs.

The archives of all federated alerts can be found within the "Alert" product category in the "products" tab.
