Post-Event Analysis

Welcome to the Spacecraft Design - Post event analysis service

Overview

The service “Spacecraft Design - Post event analysis” aims to provide means to correlate particular (spacecraft) anomaly events with space environment data (e.g. space particle radiation, plasma, microparticles, and electromagnetic radiation). By means of space environment data and tools (e.g., superposed epoch analysis, data mining), the ESA Space Weather Service Network allows the user to analyse and correlate the space environment at a given time and/or location with effects and anomaly events on specific spacecraft, equipment or components. The service, intended for personnel involved in spacecraft design, operates within the limitations brought by data confidentiality of the spacecraft information. Information on the vulnerability of components, equipment or spacecraft based on the performed analyses could be used as input for future spacecraft models or versions.

This service is implemented through a combination of products and tools which can be found in the secton below along with expert support provided by the teams constituting the ESA Space Weather Service Network. Should you require further guidance in the use of this service, or have specific questions about any aspects of the service presented here, don’t hesitate to contact the Helpdesk.

User Manual

Spacecraft need to be able to withstand the effects that the multitude range of phenomena (e.g. solar flares, coronal mass ejections, solar energetic particle events) in the dynamic space environment may have on technology. The goal of spacecraft radiation shielding is to protect the crew and hardware (exterior and interior) from the radiation environment encountered in space. When designing and building a spacecraft both short- and long-term cumulative effects must be considered. Identifying the cause of an unexplained technical anomaly event is important, as this information can help improve the designing of future efficient shielding.
