SWE Portal 3.6.0 Release Note

The ESA Space Weather team is pleased to announce that SWE Portal 3.6.0 was released on 09 March 2023.

In this update, the ESA SWE Services have been enhanced with the incorporation of the following new and updated products and tools :

From the Solar Weather Expert Service Centre:

  • The Solar Influences Data analysis Centre (ROB/SIDC) provides:
    • The SIDC Solar EUV flare detection is a product providing access to a catalogue of EUV flares detected in 9.4 nm images from the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) satellite. Characteristics of the EUV flares are also provided including the estimated GOES X-ray flare class and flare video peek-time view.

From the Space Radiation Expert Service Centre:

  • Space Research Laboratory, Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Turku (UTU/SRL) provides:
    • "Solar Energetic Particle event catalogue: high-energy solar proton events" (R.130) The catalogue has been extended with 12 additional events covering now a time period up to March 2022.

From the Heliospheric Weather Expert Service Centre:

  • Infor’Marty in conjunction with IRAP/CDPP provides:
    • Product that presents the magnetic connectivity from selected solar system objects and spacecraft to the solar surface, useful for assessing the proximity of active regions that may give rise solar energetic particles and that will subsequently be guided by the interplanetary magnetic field.
  • STFC/RAL Space provides:
    • The HPARC/ST product has been updated to include more recent energetic proton data.
  • UNIGRAZ provides:
    • The updated version of the Drag Based Ensemble Model includes an option to use a varying background solar wind speed profile based on L1 in-situ measurements or using a persistence model for forecast arrivals. By incorporating dynamic background solar wind speed v4 of DBEM is able to provide Earthward directed CME arrival times and speed with more accuracy.
  • UNIGRAZ provides:
    • The updated version of the Empirical Solar Wind Forecast uses coronal hole areas as a basis to predict the solar wind speed at Earth with an approximately four-day lead-time. The latest revision of this product (v3.2) predicts the solar wind speed with more accuracy and for the first time features a newly developed Dst index forecast.

From the Geomagnetic Expert Service Centre:

  • The British Geological Survey (BGS) provides:
    • Update to the Horizontal electric field data (UK) product to present ten-second values filtered from raw 10 Hz data. This replaces the one-second values presented previously. 
  • DTU Space provides:
    • Update of the K-Index product by providing magnetometer data from 3 additional stations located at Qaanaaq, Qeqertarsuaq and Narsarsuaq.

At the Service Domains, there is a new section called Preview Dashboard, which highlights the state-of-the-art products that are proposed for the future integration in the ESA space weather services, to assess their capabilities, functionality and user satisfaction.
