* SPACE WEATHER EURO NEWS - S*W*E*N

1. Hybrid ESWW17/ESWW2021, 25th – 29th October 2021, Glasgow, Scotland, and Online: Fair, Sponsorship, Medals, and Other Reminders

From: Mario Bisi

Already over 300 abstracts, across six plenary and 12 parallel sessions along with 18 Topical Discussion Meeting (TDM) proposals, have been received for this year’s hybrid European Space Weather Week. The Programme Committee (PC) are currently working with the convenors and proposers to set the programme ahead of the 13th August 2021 programme-live date on the website:
http://esww17.iopconfs.org/dates

Submissions for late abstracts as posters/QuickViews only will reopen on 24th July 2021 and will remain open until 3rd September 2021.

The Local Organising Committee (LOC) and PC have arranged that this year’s ESWW fair will take place as a hybrid event (in-person stands and an online presence). Work is ongoing to make the virtual elements of the fair as immersive as possible so that those who cannot attend in person can still take part. This goes both ways, for participants, as well as for exhibitors, since ESWW2021 will be offering opportunities for a virtual fair stand too. The LOC are presently finalising the practical details and all fair updates coming in due course will be published here:
http://esww17.iopconfs.org/fair

Booking for the physical fair stands at the venue (subject to availability) will open on 13th September 2021. However, in the meantime, many of the sponsorship packages include a fair stand for the entire week (subject to availability). More details are available here:
http://esww17.iopconfs.org/sponsorship

Those looking to take part in the fair for ESWW17/ESWW2021 this year, with questions not addressed in above links can contact the LOC with details available on this page:
http://esww17.iopconfs.org/enquiries

A further reminder that nominations of colleagues working in the space weather and space climate areas for one of the prestigious international medals are still open until 5th September 2021:
http://esww17.iopconfs.org/Medals

Finally, registration is now open for ESWW2021! Both in-person and virtual/online registrations have already been received. The LOC have worked on a wide variety of registration options to try to make it as easy as possible for those attending both from within and from outside of Europe with the ongoing COVID-19 uncertainties, including options to refund from an in-person registration to the online registration if government travel restrictions preclude attendees from travelling. Attendees are encouraged to register early for the lowest rates! Full details can be found on the main registration page here:
http://esww17.iopconfs.org/register

The conference website will be the first place to get future updates for ESWW2021:

2. Migration of COSPAR PRBEM website and IRBEM software library to github

From: Antoine Brunet

The COSPAR Panel for Radiation Belt Environment Modeling (PRBEM) is pleased to announce a new website:
https://prbem.github.io/
and the migration of the IRBEM library from sourceforge to github:
https://github.com/PRBEM/IRBEM

It was decided to migrate IRBEM to github to facilitate community involvement in the development of the library. All interested members of the community are encouraged to join the github group and contribute to the development of the IRBEM software.

The IRBEM library is a suite of Fortran codes that can be used to compute magnetic coordinates and charged particle drift shells for various internal and external magnetic field models. Additional routines are provided for coordinate system and time format transformations. The library can be called from Fortran or C, and Python, MATLAB, and IDL wrappers are provided in the distribution package. The IRBEM library is free and open-source software distributed under the terms of the GNU Lesser General Public License.

The IRBEM-extras project will continue to contain the developer-contributed packages that were previously hosted on sourceforge alongside the library:
https://github.com/PRBEM/IRBEM-extras

The PRBEM standards documents (e.g., particle flux variable and CDF file format guidelines, particle instrument response function guidelines) that were previously hosted within the IRBEM package are now being hosted and maintained as standalone documents at the PRBEM website:
https://prbem.github.io/docs/

Antoine Brunet (France), PRBEM Vice-Chair
Seth Claudepierre (USA), PRBEM Vice-Chair
Vladimir Mikhailov (Russia), PRBEM Vice-Chair

3. The European Space Weather and Space Climate Community decides its new future organisation

From: Sophie Chabanski

In the recent months, the European Space Weather and Space Climate Community (ESWC) started to work out a uniting organisation to help the community to sustain and develop the successful efforts made thus far:
https://quovadis.aeronomie.be/index.php

A first vote was held from 28th to 30th June 2021 in order to decide what and how it should be implemented. 289 electors registered to the electoral census.

Amongst the voters, 92% answered “yes” to the question “Should the European Space Weather and Space Climate Community establish an organisation to coordinate and represent it?”

The second question was to choose the type of organisation. 54% voted for an independent International Non-Profit Association, 26% to join the European Physical Society as a Division and 20% had no preference.

Based on the outcome of the vote, the Interim Board will work to establish a new International Non-Profit Association. A public discussion will be open in September to the International community (not restricted to Europe) to get advice and comments in real time through a Slack forum. This discussion will include a call for proposals on how to name the new organisation. In parallel, the statutes will be prepared and the legal aspects will be set. The electoral census will be reopened, in order to let new voters join.

The plan is to create this new organisation in the days following the ESWW 2021.

4. PITHIA-NRF Trans-National Access (TNA): 1st Call

From: Anna Belehaki

PITHIA-NRF (Plasmasphere Ionosphere Thermosphere Integrated Research Environment and Access services: a Network of Research Facilities) invites applications for access to a variety of research facilities for studies and modelling of physical processes acting in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, with support from experts within the field. There are twelve nodes within PITHIA-NRF all dedicated to investigating the plasmasphere, ionosphere and/or thermosphere.
The access can be physical access (one-week visit with travel and accommodation included) or remote access (one-month remote access with weekly support). The available services or resources are limited, and a competitive process is required following a defined procedure and criteria for the selection of users.

Information of project opportunities and description of the nodes are available at:
https://pithia-nrf.eu/tna/tna-calls/fisrt-tna-call

Any potential applicants are encouraged to discuss with the relevant node about the project before submitting their proposals. The TNA Support Centre at PITHIA-NRF can help establishing contact points with the nodes:
tna - at - pithia-nrf.eu

The call is open from 15 July 2021 until the deadline 30 September 2021. The application can be submitted at any time between these dates.

Access is provided for science projects to users from Academia, Small and Medium Enterprises, Industry, and Public Organisations.

The application should be filled in and submitted using the online form:
https://pithia-nrf.eu/forms/tna-application-form

After submission, eligibility and feasibility checks will be performed followed by the scientific evaluation. Instructions to be followed are available at:
https://pithia-nrf.eu/tna/tna-calls

5. European Solar System Plasma Community (ESSPC)

From: Yuri Shprits

Over the last few years there has been a number of meetings and discussions, where the need for the organisation of the European Solar System Plasma Community (ESSPC) has been discussed.

To continue coordination across the related fields that include ionospheric and magnetospheric physics, planetary magnetospheric environments, solar wind plasma, cometary plasmas, and solar plasmas, members of the European community and those who are interested in collaborating with the European Solar System Plasma community, are invited to join the mailing list.

The process of planning a meeting to discuss how to move forward with coordination across disciplines, countries, and agencies, as well as how to set up European priorities and objectives is underway. Additionally, the name of the group and how to organise future meetings and other community events and activities are also points for discussion. The details of the meeting will be announced through the mailing list.
