1. 42nd COSPAR Scientific Assembly 14th-22nd July 2018, Pasadena, California, United States of America

From: Piers Jiggens

The 42nd COSPAR Scientific Assembly, COSPAR 2018, will be held in Pasadena, California from 14th-22nd July 2018 and will mark the 60th anniversary of the formation of COSPAR itself. It will also mark the 60th anniversary of the launch of Explorer-1, built at the nearby Jet Propulsion Laboratory which is a division of the official host for COSPAR 2018, the California Institute of Technology.

COSPAR membership today is comprised of forty-two national scientific institutions, thirteen international scientific unions, and many thousands of individual associate members. Pasadena’s location on the western edge of the Pacific Rim, near several international airports, makes it an especially convenient venue for scientists from North America, Asia and Europe. COSPAR 2018 is expected to attract well over 3,000 of the leading space scientists and space leaders from as many as seventy nations.

More information about the COSPAR 2018 Assembly is available here:
http://cospar2018.org/

The assembly shall include 5 events under the umbrella of the COSPAR Panel on Space Weather:
PSW.1 - Metrics and Validation Needs for Space Weather Models and Services
https://www.cospar-assembly.org/admin/sessioninfo.php?session=792
PSW.2 - Solar System Space Weather
https://www.cospar-assembly.org/admin/sessioninfo.php?session=793
PSW.3 - From Ionospheric Indices towards Standardised Activity Scales for Space Weather Services
https://www.cospar-assembly.org/admin/sessioninfo.php?session=794
PSW.4 - Interoperability of Space Weather Data Models, Data Holdings and Data Access Tools
https://www.cospar-assembly.org/admin/sessioninfo.php?session=795
PSW.5 - Space Weather Initiatives and Coordinated International Efforts to implement COSPAR-ILWS Roadmap Recommendations
https://www.cospar-assembly.org/admin/sessioninfo.php?session=796

The deadline for submissions to COSPAR has been extended to Friday 16th February 2018. Abstract submission must be done via the permanent COSPAR page:

2. ISSS Course on “The Polar upper Atmosphere: from Science to Operational Issues,” September 17th-21st 2018, L’Aquila, Italy

From: Paola Solini

The International School of Space Science of the Consorzio Interuniversitario per la Fisica Spaziale shall organise a course on “The Polar upper Atmosphere: from Science to Operational Issues”, to be held in L’Aquila, Italy from 17th-22nd September 2018.

The course will be directed by:
G. De Franceschi (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Rome, IT)
M. Mendillo (Boston University, Center for Space Physics, Boston, MA, USA)
C. Mitchell (University of Bath, Dept of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Bath, UK).

The goal of the course is to foster excitement and encourage involvement of the next generation of space researchers in studies of the geospace environment of Polar Regions. The importance of these regions is rapidly growing due to modern society’s dependence on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) services and products, strongly affected by ionospheric variability at high latitudes. Topics will focus on the infrastructures for multi-instrument monitoring, data management from sub-auroral to polar latitudes, the need for specialized models of the upper atmosphere, and the development of mitigation algorithms to improve GNSS services and products. The school is mainly addressed to graduate and post-graduate students with enthusiastic interest on this topic. Student teams will be organised through an “inside team building” activity scheduled on the first day of the school. This initial activity will formulate, under the supervision of experts, the “first iteration” of student-led project proposals. The establishment of the student-teams aims to both stimulate the interaction among the new generation of scientists from different countries and furnish the preliminary tools to build successful project proposals. On the final day the students-teams will present their project results and participate in their evaluation by the School Program and Organization Committees.

Applications are due before 6th May 2018.

3. 9th EISCAT_3D User Meeting, 7th-9th May 2018, Uppsala, Sweden

From: Mike Rietveld

EISCAT_3D, the new Arctic radar for space weather research has now been officially started. The 9th EISCAT_3D User Meeting is planned to take place in Uppsala, Sweden, on 7th-9th May 2018. As usual, the meeting provides a forum for interested scientists who may or may not be directly involved in the design and construction of the E3D project, and also for persons working more with its administrative, logistic, and technical aspects.

More information is available at the meeting website:

4. ESA Space Environment and Effects Final Presentation Days, 15th-16th May 2018, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands

From: Grégoire Déprez

The TEC-EPS Final Presentation Days, organised by ESA's Space Environments and Effects section, will take place on the 15th-16th May 2018 at ESTEC in the Einstein conference room.

The two days will be covering recent results from ESA’s Space Environment and Effects R&D activities on radiation monitors development and space environment modelling, analysis and simulation tools.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to save the date and to keep an eye on the webpage for the event where further updates shall be posted:
